Abstract

Paul Klee's interest in opera is documented in his Diaries and in reviews that he wrote for Swiss periodicals. This essay is an analysis of selected drawings and paintings that make implied or explicit reference to an operatic context. In a number of these works the references have autobiographical implications, while in others, opera is shown to be a source of inspiration for Klee's visual puns. The most complex images are those in which opera provided the model for an expressive relationship between form and content.
