Abstract
Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths in men and women. An estimated 131,600 cases will be diagnosed in 1998 resulting in 56,500 deaths. ~ The 5-year relative survival rate for patients with colorectal cancer is approximately 62%. Only 37% of all colorectal cancers are diagnosed in the early, localized stage, where treatment can be the most effective. 2 Inadequate compliance with screening guidelines may be responsible for a delay in colorectal cancer diagnosis. In fact, studies have revealed that compliance to colorectal cancer screening recommendations is less than 50%. ~-5
