Abstract
In this paper, an effective method of designing low-profile cavity-backed pattern-reconfigurable antenna based on half-mode substrate-integrated waveguide (HMSIW) technique is proposed. The HMSIW cavity fed by an inset <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$50\ \Omega$</tex> microstrip feedline excite a rectangular patch. Different radiation direction are realized by electronically controlling the states of several PIN diodes between HMSIW and a pair of patches. Otherwise, by switching the on/off-state of the PIN diodes, the slot can operate as a radiating element or a grating reflector. The proposed antenna is made on a single-layer substrate with a low profile of 0.021 free-space wavelength using printed circuit board (PCB) process. It also perform attractive features such as simple structure, high gain and low cross polarization level.
