Abstract

ABSTRACT Patients admitted to hospital for alcohol withdrawal present with unique nutritional risk factors predisposing them to malnutrition. This study explored patients' views on alcohol, nutrition and health through semi-structured interviews. Nine participants were included and three key themes emerged. Themes included an awareness of the tension between alcohol, nutrition and health; differences in exposure to factors that influence health and nutrition; and differences in readiness and level of engagement with healthcare. These themes highlight the different social and environmental factors, including food insecurity, that impact on health, nutrition and a person's ability to engage with healthcare.
