Abstract

The demand for healthcare resources continues to grow as a result of the ageing population and the increased prevalence of long-term conditions. Meanwhile, the public's expectations of healthcare are increasing, which is putting an exceptional strain on the NHS' resources. Leg ulcers, particularly venous leg ulcers, are common in older age. The costs associated with the management of individuals with ulcers is high, not only to the NHS but also to the patient, in terms of loss of mobility and the associated effects on their health-related quality of life. This article explores some of the issues related to healthcare demands and patients' expectations of healthcare in relation to the management of venous leg ulcers in England.
