Abstract
Fifty-nine alcohol and drug abusers entering short-term detoxification completed an inventory of causes of their illness. The number of items identified by the patients relating to the disease concept of addiction was found to predict their short-term outcome. Other predictors of short-term outcome were their own assessment of their chances of recovery and the number of previous treatments for substance abuse; the latter being inversely related to a positive treatment outcome.
