Patient-assessment techniques for cataract surgery

Abstract

Cataract is the most frequently cited self-reported cause of visual impairment and, as a consequence, cataract surgery is the most frequently performed surgery worldwide. Cataract surgery itself has improved significantly over the last few decades, as have patient-assessment techniques. As a consequence, a large variety of measurements prior to surgery are available to evaluate the patients’ symptoms, to grade cataract intensity and to calculate the best fitting intraocular lens for each patient. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of these assessment techniques.
