Abstract
A swine pox outbreak occurred in April 2017 at Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh based organized swine production farm with roughly 200 animals. Twelve growing crossbred (Large White Yorkshire and local) animals were found to have skin lesions, which varied in size and were found on the face, ears, periorbital region, legs, ventral abdomen, inguinal region, dorsal and lateral sides, etc. The lesions ranged from papules and pustules that turned into crusty lesions that looked like brownish scabs. Microscopically, infected cells showed ballooning degeneration of epidermal and follicular epithelial cells, mild epidermal hyperplasia, nuclear vacuolation, and margination of chromatin. Multiple typical eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies were also seen in the epidermal cells, and inflammatory cells were infiltrating the dermis.
