Abstract
This study was carried out on 13 digits from overgrown hoofs and 10 normal digits of dairy cattle to obtain information regarding the histopathology of the distal sesamoid bone and deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT). On gross analysis of abnormal digits only one digit showed swelling and thickening at the caudal aspect of the digit adjacent to the distal sesamoid bone such that the bone was fused to the middle and distal phalanges and the DDFT was calcified over this fusion. On microscopic examination, some changes including tendonitis with infiltration and accumulation of mononuclear inflammatory cells in the tendon, thickening of articular cartilage, keratinization of the bulb of the heel and calcification of tendon were observed. No microscopic changes were seen in the distal sesamoid bone.
