Abstract
Pseudomonas aeruginosa rough cell wall mutants AK1012, AK1386, and AK1282 had greater LD 50s for Galleria mellonella than the smooth wall strain AK957. The roughest strain, AK1282, had a lower LD 50 than the other rough strains. Strain AK957 produced pyocyanin but not fluorescein and the rough mutants produced fluorescein but not pocyanin. All strains hydrolyzed starch and gelatin and exhibited esterase, lipase, acid phosphatase, hemolytic, caseinolytic, and elastase activity. There was no evidence of larvicidal toxin production by the bacterial strains. In trypticase soy (TSB) broth all the bacterial strains grew at the same rate. In TSB media supplemented with sodium thioglycolate, larval serum, and 2-( N-morpholino)ethanesulfonic acid buffer the growth profiles varied with the bacterial strain. Spheroplast-like structures were formed by strains AK1012 and AK1386 in the 5% larval serum-supplemented TSB medium. Bacterial virulence was attributed to the nature of the cell walls.
