Abstract

A simple and fast single channel passive millimeter wave (PMMW) imaging system for public security check is presented in this paper. It distinguishes itself with traditional ones by an innovative scanning mechanism. Indoor experiments against human body with or without concealed items in clothes show that imaging could be completed in 3 s with angular resolution of about 0.7°. In addition, its field of view (FOV) is adjustable according to the size of actual target.

Highlights

  • Millimeter wave (MMW) has emerged as a promising innovative approach for security check due to its penetration capability and high resolution

  • The prototype imaging system is first tested against clear human body without any concealed dangerous items in summer 2016

  • Cost-effective, stable and simple passive millimeter wave imaging system is developed in this paper

Yang Meng[1], Anyong Qing[2,1], Chuan Lin[2], Jiefeng Zang[2], Yizhe Zhao1 & Cheng Zhang[1]. A simple and fast single channel passive millimeter wave (PMMW) imaging system for public security check is presented in this paper. It distinguishes itself with traditional ones by an innovative scanning mechanism. It is absolutely safe to both inspectors and inspected objects It is one of the critical features taken advantage of by PMMW imaging technology for diverse promising applications[1,2], e.g., security check at airports, railway and subway stations, etc[3]. It is well known that all natural objects with absolute temperature above zero emit electromagnetic radiation including millimeter wave. Passive millimeter wave (PMMW) imaging systems measure the distribution of effective radiation temperatures of concerned objects. Where TEc is the effective radiation temperature in front of clothes, ρc, rc, tc, and Tc are the emissivity, reflectivity, transmittance and absolute temperature of clothes, Ts is the absolute temperature of free space, TEv is the effective radiation temperature in front of the skin of the clear volunteer, ρv, rv, tv, and Tv are the emissivity, reflectivity, transmittance and absolute temperature of the clear volunteer
