Abstract

COPD is a complex pathology that has physical, emotional and social aspects, that requires individualized therapeutical intervention and a personalized pulmonary rehabilitation program. Pulmonary rehabilitation in pacients with this pathology reduces the symptoms and increases effort tolerance, improves survival rate and decreases exacerbations frequency, contributes to improving nutritional status in some cases, allows improvement of medication effects and of measurable respiratory performances (6 minutes walking test, reduced dyspnea – BORG scale, BODE index and so on). Pulmonary rehabilitation also contributes to a better life quality, to achieving a functional status that permits independence of the pacient and the need for minimal help from other people, increases pacient’s autonomy even in the most severe cases –oxygenotherapy dependents and it helps physical and mental accommodation to the changes created by the illness. Pulmonary rehabilitation in this category of pacients contributes to reducing hospitalization duration, quick socio-professional reinsertion and also proper integration in the family and in the community.
