Abstract

TOF spectra of scattered breakup neutrons from a DD source were simulated in order to separate this fraction from inelastically scattered monoenergetic neutrons. The input data of such simulation had to be examined extensively on the basis of experimentally determined breakup spectra. After subtraction of the simulated breakup spectra from TOF spectra obtained in neutron scattering on carbon, the cross sections related to the third excited state in 12C ( E cx = 9.641 MeV) could be extracted. A comparison with results using monoenergetic neutron sources shows a good agreement.
