Abstract

The 1970s experienced dramatic increases in the number of part-time faculty employed in higher education. More active adversarial responses have been heard from part-time faculty regarding treatment of their employment interests. This paper notes major statutes, court decisions, and labor board rulings applicable to part-time faculty employment. The issues of legal status, compensation, and unit determination status in collective bargaining are discussed. Administrative parameters for the establishment of reasonable policy guidelines are presented.
