Abstract

Almost 15 years after the law passed requiring that substance use disorders and mental illness be covered by insurance on par with other disorders, it's still not happening. Last week, the federal Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Treasury issued their 2022 Report to Congress on the Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) of 2008. The report says that insurance companies are still failing to meet the requirements of the law and the agencies' implementing regulations requiring that mental health and substance use disorder benefits be covered at parity with medical and surgical benefits.
