Abstract

The first permanent molars are the first teeth to erupt at the age of 6-7 years. The first permanent molars function to chew, pound and grind food because they have a wide chewing surface with many protrusions and indentations, making them the teeth most at risk for caries. The incidence of caries in the first molar, especially in the mandible, is a tooth that has a high prevalence of extraction and most of it is caused by caries, and the discipline of children in maintaining their teeth is still lacking. good food retention. Most parents do not know that these teeth are porous, and assume that there will be more replacement teeth, even though these teeth are permanent teeth and will not be replaced again. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between parental knowledge and caries of the first permanent molars in children. The research method used descriptive non-experimental with a cross sectional design. The population of grade 3 school children at SDN Barutunggul IV, Rancabali District, Bandung Regency with a total sample of 52 people. The data were analyzed using the SPSS Version 21 application with the Chi-Square statistical test method. The results showed that most of the respondents had a level of knowledge about caries in the first permanent molars which were included in the sufficient and less categories (85%). Most of the respondents had experience of caries in the first permanent molars with moderate and poor criteria (94%). The results of the analysis showed that there was a relationship between parental knowledge and caries of the first permanent molars with a p-value of 0.001 indicating a significant correlation.
