Abstract

Values underpinning the formation of collaborative parent/school partnerships within the context of Catholic schools are examined in this study. Research conducted over the past thirty years has shown that when children's learning is supported in the home, a positive effect on access, equity and academic achievement occurs. Six Queensland Catholic schools that had developed successful partnerships with parents and the wider community volunteered to participate in the study. The sample was representative of a variety of contexts, including urban, provincial and rural settings. Data were gathered from parents and school personnel using questionnaires and follow-up focus group interviews. The research delineates the common values that both the school and parents share and how these values underpin and sustain the partnership. Implications are drawn for the establishment of sustainable partnerships in other school communities.
