Abstract
1. 1. The dental practitioner can play a role in the diagnosis of parathyroid disease if he is alert to the pathologic manifestations of these disorders occurring in or around the oral cavity. 2. 2. The various forms of hypoparathyroidism have been discussed. Idiopathic hypoparathyroid disease may manifest itself by the late eruption and premature falling-out of teeth because of defective dentine and enamel. Acquired hypoparathyroidism is most often iatrogenic in origin. 3. 3. Hyperparathyroidism can cause loss of the lamina dura, as well as giantcell tumors or cysts of the mandible or alveolus. 4. 4. Peptic ulcer, urinary calculi, and pancreatitis may be associated with hyperparathyroid disease. 5. 5. An unusual case of carcinoma of the parathyroid gland has been reported, as well as a case of polyendocrine adenomas.
