Abstract

The monofaunated rumen ciliate Entodinium caudatum used in the optimum two-step freezing protocol shows a high cell survival. The decisive components of the recultivation were the inoculum size (>2000 ml −1) and the feed (wheat flour plus ground dried white clover) and to a lesser extent, the composition of the tested culture media. The addition of glucose to the thawed cell suspension stabilized the development of protozoal culture during recultivation.
