Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) provides an opportunity for organizations to implement advanced instantaneous team interventions to improve teamwork. As embedded AI options increase across enterprise technology platforms (e.g., Zoom AI Companion), larger quantities of data will become available to understand team dynamics and impact team performance. The shift to AI embedded in knowledge teams has the ability to change the efficiency of teams by reducing mundane tasks and improving team dynamics yet also disrupting the teaming environment including the development of trust and psychological safety. We propose the paradox of AI as a tool for team interventions focusing on embedded AI for improving teamwork yet simultaneously restricting team dynamics; a tension that is offering positive and negative implications for teams. Finally, we provide organizational strategies for the effective use of AI to improve team dynamics and team leadership development.
