Abstract

During the ca. 500 years of the Roman Empire, road construction and maintenance was viewed as a priority, but it also offered a perfect means of propaganda. Today, the traces of these activities are visible in many places; inscriptions on Roman milestones (miliarum) and on other constructions proudly present these extraordinary achievements, which were accomplished, in most cases, by military pioneer troops.
