Abstract

An account is presented of some experiences of the various techniques and instruments used in the development of diesel engines. The measurement of mass fuel consumption by electronic methods to reduce testing time is detailed, together with a discussion on the elimination of the consequent inaccuracy. The accuracy of single-cycle techniques and the point-by-point method for dynamic pressure measurements are considered together with frequency-modulated techniques, direct current techniques, oscilloscopes, and galvanometer recorders.Details of the response time and repeatability of fast-response thermocouples for gas temperature measurements are discussed. The use of digital equipment such as voltmeters for strain and counters for speed and flow measurement is also described.
