Abstract

The use of glandless pumps for extraction pump duty raises particular problems accruing from the environmental conditions. Axial thrust variation can be accommodated and motor cooling circuit security may be achieved, providing care is taken to control pressure levels within the machine. A 500-MW heater extraction pump has undergone prototype tests and has demonstrated successful application of pressure-level control techniques. Similar design principles apply to glandless pumps for suction booster duty, but the problems of motor safeguard, due to operating conditions, are not so acute.
