Abstract

This paper investigates the reasons for the changing face of the gas industry and discusses the wide range of installations utilizing gaseous fuel for space and comfort heating. The gaseous fuels available in the U.K. are examined and the fundamental principles of combustion and control and the safeguards incorporated in appliances are outlined. The problems of conversion from town gas to natural gas are also dealt with. The main part of the paper is a review of types of gas installation used for space heating and cooling. Domestic, commercial and industrial installations and district heating are dealt with separately and the engineering and design details are given, supported by extensive references. Particular reference is made to installations peculiar to gas. The paper suggests a promising future for gas, and an attempt is made to indicate future trends in utilization and fuel costs.
