Abstract
1N THE SPECTRUM of effects of maternal alcohol consumption on the developing embryo and fetus, short palpebral fissures have been the most consistent physical feature noted. Short palpebral fissures were present in 35 of 38 patients with the fetal alcohol syndrome studied by Hanson et aP and are one of the most common abnormal features noted in offspring of women who drink lesser amounts of alcohol. The only available standards for palpebral fissure length are out-dated, having been tabulated in 1929 by two separate investigators. ~' 3 The standards at birth in both of those studies are inadequate since gestational age was not considered, nor are measurements available for preterm infants. Because of the potential diagnostic implications of this sign, the present study was undertaken to establish normal standards for palpebral fissure length from 32 to 40 weeks' gestation.
