Abstract

A shell-model calculation taking into account 4 particles in the shells if1p12, 1rmd52, 2rms12, 1d32. and using a pairing (J = 0, 1)-plus-quadrupole Hamiltonian gives a unified description of the even-parity states of 20Ne and 16O. Apart from the known 4p-4h band the other low-lying even-parity states of 16O appear to have a 2p-2h structure. The states of 16O interpreted recently as an 8p-8h band should contain a perceptible 4p-4h component.
