Abstract

We determine the probability of pair annihilation for charged scalar particles in an external electromagnetic field that is switched on for a finite interval, within the context of relativistic quantum mechanics of a single particle. We present the results of numerical calculations in several graphs. We find that this probability is extremely small for fields of the magnitude usually found in the laboratory. We also obtain a general expression for the spreading of the wave packet that represents a free relativistic scalar particle.
