Abstract

The author reviews both the historical contribution of abstract expressionism in which the technique of action painting is employed and visual perception as it applies to a basic appreciation of nonfigurative art. This is followed by a discussion of his paintings in which he combines the traditions and techniques of American abstract expressionism and Byzantine and Russian iconography using a combination of action painting and precise brushwork. The author associates his paintings with ‘polyvariant’ musical compositions and compares the appreciation of paintings to that of music.
