Abstract
Diclofenac is a widely used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is used to relieve pain and inflammation in rheumatic disease (including juvenile arthritis) and gout, and has been used both pre- and post-operatively as an analgesic. There are extensive side-effects and contraindications associated with diclofenac (in particular gastrointestinal problems) of which the nurse prescriber should be aware. However, given the recent move away from prescribing cyclo-oxygenase 2 (COX 2) inhibitors it is timely to re-evaluate the risks and benefits of this drug.
