Abstract
Total AV block after surgery of congenital heart lesions in infancy and childhood is a severe complication. Before introduction of permanent cardiac pacemaker therapy in children in 1962, the mortality rate was high. Since the number of open-heart procedures in early infancy and childhood has rapidly increased, pacemaker implantation in children has become more and more important. In comparison, the number of patients with congenital heart block who need permanent cardiac pacemaker therapy is relatively low.
