Abstract

The value of prenatal bonding is so well established in the literature that pregnant women cannot be considered passive incubators anymore. Robust scientific evidence continues to reveal that expectant women significantly influence the health and wellbeing of the unborn baby through the extensive release of hormones and neurotransmitters that will determine different behaviours throughout life. This case report describes a 40-year-old woman’s journey from pre-conception to motherhood and explores how the pre and perinatal psychology paradigm might have influenced the quality of her prenatal bonding and attachment with her unborn baby. In drawing on her story, ways in which health care providers can support expectant parents’ connection with the baby from conception on are highlighted. It is proposed that this unique relationship during pregnancy offers health care providers with a unique opportunity to help create an optimal fetal environment that may echo across their future lifespan. It was concluded that awareness and acknowledgement of the expectant baby’s presence enhances the prenatal bonding and establishes emotional connections between the parents and the expectant baby.
