Abstract

Abstract Drug use during pregnancy and breastfeeding is widespread. However, information on the safety of drug use during pregnancy and/or breastfeeding is limited. For well-informed decision making, clear and high-quality information on the potential effects of drugs used during pregnancy or breastfeeding is essential for women and their health care providers. The Dutch Pregnancy Drug Register (pREGnant) was developed to provide a central database of relevant information for the purpose of gaining insight into medication use among pregnant and breastfeeding women and safety issues concerning maternal and fetal or infant health. If a similar register were introduced in other countries, such as Canada, it would contribute valuable data and reduce uncertainty about the effects of medication use during pregnancy and lactation.
