Abstract

Boldness is a heritable personality trait reflecting low sensitivity to threat. Boldness is negatively associated with symptoms of anxiety disorders and positively associated with the interpersonal and affective deficits observed in psychopathy. Thus, boldness may be an important risk factor for disorders involving abnormal fear processing. Proton (1H) magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) has shown that higher concentrations of prefrontal γ-amino butyric acid (GABA) in the anterior cingulate (ACC) is implicated in the extinction and recovery of conditioned fear. The current study was a preliminary investigation of the link between boldness and GABA concentrations in the ACC.
