Abstract
AbstractNew LC technology, such as polymer stabilized (suspended) LCD (PS‐LCD), blue phase LCD is interested in now. It is necessary to form polymer layer in PS‐LCD and polymer network structure in blue phase mode LC by photo curing monomer suspended in LC, and the degree of polymerization of monomer is important to control their systems to avoid the influence of residual monomer. But it is difficult to analyze polymer and residual monomer in LC because of low concentration less than 1 % in PS‐LCD (10% in blue phase LCD). Micro analysis methods such as infrared micro‐spectroscopy(μ‐IR) and micro‐sampling mass spectrometry (μ ‐ MS) provide deep insights of polymerization in liquid directly and it is possible to estimate the degree of polymerization and the quantity of residual monomer. In this paper, it has tried to analyze the polymerization of monomer suspended in LCD dividing the cell cross sectional direction, bulk liquid crystal (LC) layer and interface LC/PI film layer, and investigated the polymerization of monomer and the residual monomer. It is supposed that monomer suspended in LC is much condensed and much polymerized at the interface LC/PI alignment film existing a little in bulk layer.
