Abstract

To determine the umbilical cord diameter (UCD) at 11–14 weeks of gestation. The UCD was measured in 182 fetuses with normal karyotype. The calipers were placed on the outer margins of the umbilical cord. Linear regression is used to determine the significance of the association between the UCD and crown rump length (CRL). The median fetal CRL was 66.4 mm (range 45–84 mm) and the median gestation was 12 (11–14) completed weeks. The mean UCD is increasing with gestational age (r = 0.566, p < 0.001) and with the CRL (r = 0.628, p < 0.001). The regression equation for the mean UCD (y) according to the CRL (x) is: y = 0.028*x + 1.983(p < 0.001) The UCD is significantly increasing with gestational age and the fetal CRL. Further investigation of the UCD in a larger population of aneuploid fetuses and twin pregnancies will clarify the possible role of UCD assessment at 11–14 weeks for screening for chromosomal defects or prediction of pregnancy complications in monochorionic twin pregnancies.
