Abstract

Focus Areas: Integrative Approaches to Care, Alleviating PainPatients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy infusion are often burdened with multiple physical and psychological effects such as anxiety, nausea, peripheral neuropathy, fatigue, headaches, and depression due to the medications they are prescribed, their disease process, and their perception of what both of these might mean to them. Acupuncture and massage can alleviate these concerns via non-pharmacological means. In this workshop, participants will learn how these therapies are integrated into the outpatient infusion suites at Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Care Center and the oncology inpatient units at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Hands-on massage and acupressure techniques will be demonstrated and can be shared with patients and caregivers to practice at home, thus providing both with an active, participatory role in their health and recovery.
