Abstract

Abstract The Popular Front for the Liberation of the Saquia el Hamra and Rio de Oro (Polisario Front) composed of Western Sahara (Saharawis) tribesmen claim independence from Morocco under agreements made between France, Spain, and Morocco in 1900, 1904, and 1912; and ongoing United Nations arbitration including a 2001 agreement for autonomy and a subsequent referendum to be held governing independence. Meanwhile, the Polisario will pursue independence for Western Sahara and resume the insurgency against Morocco if protracted international arbitration fails. The Polisario is not seeking Weapons of Mass Destruction including bioterrorism to achieve its political ends. There are no indications that the Polisario will adopt other than conventional means to wage their liberation campaign.
