Abstract
continuous monitoring of O2 in the airway is informative concerning the efficacy of oxygen supply and pulmonary gas exchange. When variable performance devices are usedFO2 varies considerably between subjects especially in the inspiratory phase. Measurement ofFO2(ET) represent a feasible alternative toFO2(I). The Venturi mask (fixed performance device) gives excellent control over the inspired oxygen concentration, whereas the nasal catheter with reservoir gives the highest obtainable airway O2 concentration.
