Abstract

The Furukawa Electric Company produces wire rods of electrolytic tough pitch (ETP) copper using SCR systems which consist of a shaft furnace, a belt and wheel type casting machine, and rolling mills. In the case of ETP wire rod, the oxygen content has a remarkable influence on the qualities of cast bars and the properties of the products. Therefore, in the continuous melting, casting and rolling process, the oxygen content in the molten copper has to be controlled continuously and accurately within a certain range. The continuous measurement and control of oxygen in the molten copper with solid electrolyte cells has been investigated in the SCR systems of the Furukawa Electric Company. The oxygen probe which has been developed has a life as long as 130 ± 20 h, and the oxygen in the molten copper can be continuously controlled in a pre-set range by computer.
