Abstract

Oxygen inhibits photosynthetic CO 2 fixation in isolated maize bundle sheath strands. This inhibition is rapidly and completely reversible and is relieved by increased levels of CO 2. These observations provide evidence that the relative oxygen-insensitivity of photosynthesis in intact maize leaves results from a CO 2 concentrating mechanism.
