Abstract

The exchange of 18O between liquid water and various uranium oxides has been studied at temperatures up to the critical temperature of water. Uranium dioxide and U 3O 8 undergo oxygen exchange only at elevated temperatures, whereas uranium trioxide is found to exchange oxygen with liquid water to a readily measurable extent even at 25°C; in the latter case exchange is complete in 4 hr at 100°C.
