Abstract

The first gas insulated transmission line installed in the US was at the PSEG Hudson Generating station in New Jersey in 1972. The GIL is direct buried connecting the AIS substation equipment to a transformer located remote from the substation. This installation is still energized and in use today. The GIL technology has proven its technical reliability without major failures. This high system reliability has been achieved through the simplicity of its design where only aluminum tubes for conductor and enclosure are used and the insulating medium is a gas exhibiting no aging.
