Abstract

The QED theory of the spectral line profile based on the adiabatic S-matrix approach is developed. This theory is used for the description of the decay of the overlapping levels with identical quantum numbers. This situation, unusual for neutral atoms, can take place in the spectra of the multi-charged ions. The double excited levels 2s2 + 2p2 of the heliumlike uranium are considered as an example. The relative magnitude of the predicted effect reaches 20% and is well over the inaccuracy of the calculation (1-3%).
