Abstract

Granulosa cell tumor is the most common type of neoplasm that affects the ovaries of mares. It is usually benign and unilateral, while the contralateral ovary is usually atrophied and without follicular activity. The diagnostic suspicion is based on clinical signs and behavioral changes, such as anestrus and increased libido; however, it is confirmed by hormonal, ultrasound and histopathological examinations. The aim of this study is to report a case of granulosa cell tumor in an 18-year-old female horse, submitted to an ovariectomy procedure and pre- and postoperative care. Surgical intervention proved effective, not only preventing damage that could be caused by the tumor, but also restoring follicular activity in the contralateral ovary.
