Abstract

Abstract Southeast Fujian (SEF), which includes 5 prefecture-level cities—Fuzhou, Putian, Quanzhou, Xiamen, Zhangzhou, 6 county-level cities, and 22 counties, is economically, politically and culturally the central area of Fujian province (Figure 1). The region is also one of the main origins of overseas Chinese. There are 8 million Fujianese in foreign countries and 0.8 million in Hong Kong and Macao. Most of them identify SEF as their roots. SEF is close to Taiwan, 80 per cent of the ancestors of Taiwanese have originated from the region (Zhuang Renxian, 1993). This paper reviews the process of economic growth from 1978 to date, and particularly highlights the growth of the outward economy (economy with an export bias and a high dependence on foreign investment). Based on this, the paper describes the effect of the outward economy on urbanization and the evolution of the urban system. There are four parts in the paper.
