Abstract

THE BOOKS analyzed in black literature in this essay were selected to represent certain main lines of development in autobiography, fiction, poetry, and criticism. As the title implies, the essay is limited in its coverage to books bearing a 1972 copyright, with the exception of Rene Maran's Batouala, which is included because the definitive edition of this famous work appeared in English translation for the first time in 1972.
