Abstract
This study investigates the problem of return flux of outgassing molecules from a sphere due to the collisions with ambient molecules in space environment. The Test Particle Monte Carlo (TPMC) method has been einployed, and the results are compared with the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) results. The comparison shows that they are in good agreement for collisions of light molecules, but the T P M C results gradually deviate from the results of DSMC for collisions of heavier molecules However, the T P M C has the advantage that very large sample size (billion molecules or more) can be used and computer time can be reduced nearly three to four orders of magnitude Therefore, it is more practical than the DSMC method for predictions of the spacecraft contamination u N o m e i i c l a t u r e diameter of an outgassing molecule diameter of an ambient molecule Boltzmann constant constant which defines the size of the control volume mass of molecule with molecular weight of unity, mo = 0.lG58 x mass of outgassing molecule, ml = M I x nio mass of ambient molecule, ma = Mz x m~ niolecular weight of the outgassing molecules molecular weight. of the ambient molecules g V:.
