Abstract

This chapter presents various assessments procedures, such as concepts in secondary mathematics and science project (CSMS) science reasoning tasks, comprehension test for college of education students, Garnett college test, and Maitland Graves design judgment test. The tasks that form the CSMS science reasoning test were developed by a research team based at Chelsea college, University of London, and funded by the social science research council. The purpose was to provide the materials that were suitable for group administration, which would determine the Piagetian level of operational thinking that a pupil has reached. Comprehension test for college of education students could be used to help and supplement other methods of selecting students for entry to college, to throw some light on their individual difficulties in understanding what they read, and to show whether students are suited to certain alternative or advanced course. The test should be helpful in comparing different groups of students. Garnett college test was constructed for use as an attainment test for students taking the general course in engineering science in technical colleges and in colleges of further education. It was designed to cover the published syllabus for that course and the level of difficulty was intended to be appropriate for students taking the one-year course and for those who were in the second year of the two-year course.
