Abstract
On completion of this article the reader should be able to identify the causes and risk factors associated with osteoporosis, evaluate potential treatments for osteoporosis and discuss the role of the orthopaedic nurse in preventing osteoporosis. The article will enable the reader to address PREP requirements through the following UKCC categories for professional development: care enhancement, practice development and reducing risk. Examples of how this may be achieved, and possible evidence for the reader's professional profile are given. For example: u Review the information on osteoporosis and its prevention that you provide (or do not provide) for your patients/clients. Develop and/or evaluate a health promotion package on osteoporosis for use in your area. Set up links with organizations such as the National Society to acquire and maintain current literature on osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a common disease which is often associated with pain, disability and death. (Advisory Group on 1994:5)
