Abstract

Osteoporosis in men is an underdiagnosed and undertreated disease that is highly prevalent. Up to 25% of men will present with an osteoporotic fracture throughout their life. Secondary forms of the disease are common and it is necessary to rule them out in the diagnostic evaluation process. The most common secondary causes and risk factors of osteoporosis in men include various endocrine diseases (particularly hypogonadism), lifestyle-related diseases, and some pharmacological treatments. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is an essential diagnostic test. Laboratory determinations should be aimed at ruling out secondary forms of the disease. Treatment should involve optimization of calcium and vitamin D intake and correction of the etiological abnormalities identified. Bisphosphonates, denosumab, and teriparatide have been shown to be effective in increasing bone mass in these patients
